FAREWELL FROM THE SPILL TEAM...

When we put out the email that SPILL was coming to a close, Chris and I were in Manchester at In The City, it’s a music conference where people from the industry congratulate each other about shit. I’d sort of been avoiding talking to anyone too much about any future editions of the magazine, because I didn’t really want to get into why we were finishing.
Two amazing things happened at that conference, the first was that I got to see The Noisettes, and the second was the timing of the announcement of the closure of SPILL.
I was sitting in the front row watching two very interesting informed people discussing the artists whose sounds they feel had sculpted their lives. I swear I’ll never forget it. Geoff Travis and Tony Wilson chatted like two old school friends about artists that not only make amazing music but that have also been pivotal players during the last 50 years. It really made me step back and take stock. Publications like SPILL will come and go, some will be as short lived as a bedroom zine that lasts as long as an idea, others will be million pound businesses that grout the music industry. At SPILL we were always aware that we were a monthly book of opinions, some good, some bad, some downright contagious, and others were at times a little mediocre. But the driving force, the ethos behind the magazine, was always to give exposure to those that needed it and deserved it most. We tried so desperately to not be ‘in’ or ‘scene’ or dare I say it ‘cool’. It was always so important that whomever we had on our cover or in our magazine brought in to these ideals as artists and as people.
And I think it worked, I hope that you picked up on it when you read the magazine. Don’t get me wrong, of course everyone has to survive, and I guess that’s the balancing act you have to do when you try and forge your identity in any creative industry.
It’s funny, this last month is the first month I haven’t had to edit SPILL, and I feel a little odd! When you commit to such a big project like the magazine, you can’t help but lose yourself in it. The reason for us deciding to call it a day? I think we both felt after three years we wanted a new challenge, Chris at Jeepster and I at The Boileroom. We wanted to go out on a high and celebrate what everyone had achieved by compiling a best of. So as usual I am writing the editors notes moments before we hurry the disc off to the printers, with the contemplation that this will be the last time I write to you… a parting thought.
And as any good journalist will know, if you can’t say it right yourself use someone else’s words! In this instance I shall borrow from the teachings of Mr Hunter S Thompson. Yes, I know this a mis quote, but fuck it. The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side. Hunter S. Thompson “Generation of Swine: Tales of Shame and Degradation in the ‘80s.”

My point is that I think that it’s the music that will always be there and, dare I say it speak for it self, and the rest of us, well we are all just trying to make a living. Thank you to everyone that has supported us- that includes friends, family, loved ones and well everyone. I thank you and goodnight...

It is with a heavy heart that I write my farewell to SPILL Magazine. It seems not that long ago, I was the only person Chris Dempsey knew (besides Stuart of course) who liked dance music, and thus…I became the dance editor for SPILL…
I’ll never forget the day, or the plaid trousers Chris was wearing, but I digress. I want to say a big THANKS to Chris, Dom, Oli, and Neil for making SPILL THE BEST Independent Music Magazine on the planet, EVER. We’ve had a lot of laughs (and probably more tears than we would like to admit), and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to express my love of dance music through their fine publication.
I would also like to thank all of the people who gave me great music to write about, and indeed the artists who make all the great music…this industry is built on your foundations…and my life wouldn’t be the same without it.
So, CHEERS for all of the THRILLS and SPILLS.

And thanks for not sacking me when I turned everything in late, for every issue.
So the end is nigh… what a great few years I have had… my addiction to listening to new music has been fed and frankly I am worried about the withdrawal (of course you can still send me stuff to the usual address for any feedback, advice etc ;-)). The shakes are beginning to take hold and I may have to drink myself out of it. There have been some incredible bands who have landed on my desk, and I will be keeping a firm eye on them in the future. Good luck to everyone who has had a good review over the course of Spill’s history… keep on rocking in the ‘free’ world.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust...Designing SPILL magazine since issue 3 has given me an emotional journey that covers everything from blissful rapture to unabated despair. I’d like to thank Chris, Dom, Suzi, AK and Oli for this journey and their friendship throughout. I’m also moving on to new things in my postSPILL life. My debut novel ‘Spritz’ will be out in paperback from mid December 2006 at www.amazon.co.uk. It’s a black crime comedy set in Swansea about the hopes and dreams of professional alcoholic and part time husband Bob Flint. You can read more about it on my website at www.neiljhart.com I hope you all enjoyed SPILL and continue to support new music and real artists. Farewell.
